Nunney Castle

NUNNEY CASTLE

17 miles from Street Parish

Picturesque moated castle built in the 1370s. Held for the King during the Civil War, falling to Parliamentarian cannon in 1645: the gun-damaged wall finally collapsing on Christmas Day 1910.

Stanton Drew Circles and Cove

STANTON DREW CIRCLES AND COVE

18 miles from Street Parish

Although this is the third largest complex of prehistoric standing stones in England, the three circles and three-stone ‘cove’ of Stanton Drew in Somerset are surprisingly little known. The Great Circle, 113 metres in diameter, is one of the largest stone circles in the country and has 26 surviving upright stones. Yet recent surveys have revealed that the circles and cove were just part of a much more elaborate and important ritual site than had previously been imagined.

The Mission Church was built in 1989 to replace the Tin Church which had stood on the site since 1898.

The building has, apart from the church itself, a kitchen, office, lavatories, and rooms upstairs that are used for Sunday School and all kinds of meetings during the week.

Parish Church Street

Church Road, opposite Strode College Street Wells
(01458) 442671
http://www.swcd-churches.org.uk

Built in the 13th century in a 6th century sacred Christian enclosure, Street Parish Church has been constantly changing with the times. In the 21st century it has lost its inconvenient 19th century pews and been stunningly re-vamped with a new oak floor, effective underfloor heating, new specially designed and crafted lectern and other furniture, and comfortable and movable seats.

Sunday services are of a more formal nature.

The church with its excellent acoustic is a favourite venue for concerts and recitals.
